Our History

The Star Hotel was first built in 1861 as a single story building providing boutique accommodation and first-class spirits, wines and ales. The Star Hotel was well known for its extensive stables, tethering, and well-watered paddock. A taxi service met customers arriving by train, bringing them to the hotel.

In 1888/9 it was rebuilt as the two storey building we know today. An ornate verandah was added to the building in 1924, however as with many similar hotels throughout Victoria, this was later removed once motor cars replaced the horse and cart. Unfortunately, as the verandah posts were built right up to the curb, too many posts were being taken out by careless drivers in their motor cars, rendering them unsafe.

The current bistro was built onto the hotel in the 1970s and operated then as the Starlight Room. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Starlight Room was a popular location for wedding receptions and other community functions.

With such a long history in Sale, the Star Hotel holds a special place in people’s hearts. What sets The Star apart is the family atmosphere. Our family owned and run hotel is accommodating to all. The Bistro has a children’s play area, family dining booths, other more secluded booths for quiet dining, as well as separate areas for functions both large and small. There is a pool room for those wanting to play, the front Bar for those wanting to have a drink with friends and for the punter there are full TAB facilities, pokies and a small bottle shop.

When you visit the Star Hotel, you can expect first-class service with a smile.
